More notably: September 19 is the memorial day for the victims of the two largest earthquake disasters in Mexican history: 1985 (thousands of people died) and 2017 (350 people died). Many people were still holding bouquets of flowers when disaster struck.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Twitter that one person was killed by falling debris in a shopping mall in Manzanillo, western Colima state. He stressed there had not been any serious damage in Mexico City.
"It's a scary coincidence! Why today?" Laura Resendiz, 73, said outside the building where she lives in Mexico City.
This is the third largest earthquake on record to hit the Latin American country on September 19. The National Seismic Service said it was a coincidence. "There is no scientific reason to explain," the agency said.
Meanwhile, some residents are looking for other answers. "It's a huge coincidence! I don't rule out it could be a signal from God," said Federico Garcia, 57.
"It feels horrible," said Karina Suarez, 37, after evacuating the building where she lives in the capital. "When the alarm went off, we didn't believe it was real. It was shocking to have such a strong earthquake today."
Scientists still have no explanation for this coincidence, but Mexicans are panicking. Over the past 1 month, there have been consecutive strong earthquakes around the world.
