Alex Jones is facing another defamation trial after years of peddling misinformation and conspiracy theories regarding the mass shooting that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, when 26 teachers and students were murdered. Fresh off the heels of his trial in Texas last month where he was fined $49.3 million in punitive damages for his lies, Jones’ second trial began Tuesday in Waterbury, Connecticut.
A federal court began the trial of Jones’ libel suit against pro-gun activist Alex Jones by repudiating his attempts to hide Google Analytics data from their defense. The trial began with a wrench thrown in the case by plaintiffs attorneys when they claimed that Jones did not turn over Google Analytics data from 2019 to present, leading to three years of unaccounted for data on website traffic and purchases.
In his opening statement, plaintiff lawyer Chris Mattei argued that Alex Jones and InfoWars have claimed they are not journalists, but his audience fails to remember this. This resulted in perceived credibility, which Jones then used to sell products like chemical filters and fertility drugs, according to Mattei. Norman Pattis representing Jones argued that the plaintiffs have overstated the damage that Jones has done.
Jones' lawyers got it wrong by mistakenly sending a digital copy of his phone records to the plaintiffs, but they denied any wrongdoing. He will reportedly be traveling to Connecticut soon.
